All students who have turned 11 years old, entered the 7th grade, or turned 16 years old in the last year are required to have additional immunizations. Tuesday, September 6th, is the deadline to send the required paperwork back to the school nurse to participate in the school immunization clinic on September 13th. All immunizations must be up to date by September 15th. Matthew is continuing to advance at Arkansas Boys State this week! Way to Go! Matthew Harper of Cherokee Village from Highland High School was elected as a State Senator for his congressional district at Arkansas Boys State 2022, a summer leadership and civic engagement experience sponsored by the American Legion. Harper was elected by his peers during district elections on Tuesday, May 31, as part of the 81st annual session of Arkansas Boys State, where students build a mock government structure, including eight different congressional districts each with four senators and 12 representatives. "Being elected as State Senator is quite the special opportunity for Matthew and his fellow legislators," said David Saterfield, director of instruction for Arkansas Boys State. "He'll get an up-close and personal look at the legislative process with his own state legislators leading him through the process." On Wednesday, Harper will meet with Arkansas legislators to learn more about the legislative branch and process. As part of their meeting, Harper will join his fellow Arkansas Boys State senators and representatives in creating mock legislation that they will debate and vote upon at the state capitol on Friday. "I'm excited to see what ideas Matthew and his fellow legislators bring to the House and Senate floors on Friday," Saterfield said. "I hope these Arkansas Boys State legislators take it all in when they're at the capitol. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." Harper is one of more than 400 students from throughout the state attending Arkansas Boys State at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Students are mock citizens in eight different counties and congressional districts, sixteen cities, and two political parties. Tuesday at Arkansas Boys State also welcomed the beginning of campaigning for statewide office, including the office of governor.

Connor Galbreath of Cherokee Village from Highland High School was elected to City Council for Kerr City at Arkansas Boys State 2022, a summer leadership and civic engagement experience sponsored by the American Legion. Galbreath was elected by his peers during city elections on Monday, May 30, as part of the 81st annual session of Arkansas Boys State, where students build a mock government structure, including sixteen different mock cities each with their own city council, vice mayor, and mayor. "City elections lay the groundwork for the rest of the week at Arkansas Boys State," said David Saterfield, director of instruction for Arkansas Boys State. "From here, Connor will lead citizens in his city as they navigate simulations and city problems, working as their representative to develop and advocate solutions for their community this week. This is just the first step in the transformative leadership journey that students embark on this week." Galbreath is one of more than 400 students from throughout the state attending Arkansas Boys State at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Students are mock citizens in eight different counties, sixteen cities, and two political parties. "When the week comes to a close for Connor, he and his peers will have learned what it means to intentionally and thoughtfully share their stories, lead their peers, and advocate for their communities," said Lloyd Jackson, executive director of Arkansas Boys State. Matthew Harper of Cherokee Village from Highland High School was elected as County Sheriff for Hanner County at Arkansas Boys State 2022, a summer leadership and civic engagement experience sponsored by the American Legion. Harper was elected by his peers during county elections on Monday, May 30, as part of the 81st annual session of Arkansas Boys State, where students build a mock government structure, including eight different mock counties each with their own county judge, vice county judge, county sheriff, and justices of the peace. "Counties are the primary municipal structures at Arkansas Boys State - and they're what students identify with at the program and will inevitably talk to fellow alumni about in years to come," said David Saterfield, director of instruction for Arkansas Boys State. "From here, Matthew will lead citizens in his county as they navigate simulations and county problems, working as their representative to develop and advocate solutions for their constituents this week." Harper is one of more than 400 students from throughout the state attending Arkansas Boys State at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Students are mock citizens in eight different counties, sixteen cities, and two political parties. "Being elected to county office is such a remarkable honor for Matthew because the counties are the cornerstone of the student identity at Arkansas Boys State," said Saterfield. The 2022 County Tournament has awarded a $400 scholarship to two HHS seniors. Congratulations to Emma Sliter and Nate Kulczycki for receiving this scholarship award.

Highland High School has been further recognized for exceptional student performance in Math and English Language Arts on the 2021 ACT Aspire exam. The University of Arkansas’ Office for Educational Policy has published their “Beating the Odds” lists and HHS won Outstanding Educational Performance awards in four categories. Beating the Odds schools are those whose students are demonstrating high academic growth despite serving a population where at least 2/3 of the students come from low-income households. Academic growth is considered to be a better reflection than proficiency rates of how a school is impacting students. Highland placed 9th in both Overall growth and Math growth among all “high poverty” high schools in Arkansas, as well as 1st in the Northeast region of the state in Math growth and 2nd in the region in English Language Arts growth. The administration of Highland High School wishes to express both appreciation and congratulations to the teachers, staff, and students of HHS for this well-deserved recognition.

We are excited to announce that Highland High School has been recognized as one of the top five high schools in the northeast region of Arkansas for Overall Growth on the 2020-2021 ACT Aspire Summative exam. HHS was also ranked 2nd in the northeast region in Math Content Growth. Rankings were based on statistics compiled by the University of Arkansas’ Office of Educational Policy from the recently published ESSA School Index report.

The HHS Tennis teams had a great two days of District Tournament competition. The boys finished as co-champions—tying with Valley View. Keegan Wallis and Dylan Lambert won 1st in doubles, Toby Gotte 2nd in singles, and Micah McBryde 3rd in singles. The girls placed 3rd in the conference. Harlee Deloach won 3rd in singles and Nevaeh Stricklin and Kynlee Titus won 3rd in doubles. There were 7 state qualifiers. There will be a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) workshop in the HHS cafeteria on Monday, October 4 for seniors and senior parents.
